What changed (6)

  • Changed every line to upper casePrint the address in upper case.
  • V8V3K8 → V8V 3K8Print the postal code in upper case, with one space between the first three and last three characters and no hyphen.
  • BRITISH COLUMBIA → BCUse the official two-letter province or territory abbreviation.
  • APT 204 1128 FORT STREET → 204-1128 FORT STREETA unit number can go before the civic number with a hyphen in between, without a unit word such as APT.
  • STREET → STUse the abbreviated street type.
  • Removed punctuation and # symbolsDon't use punctuation unless it's part of a proper name, and never use the # symbol.
This checks the format only, not whether the address exists or receives mail. Direct Mailer runs the same check on every piece before it prints; see address verification.

Rules from Canada Post's addressing guidelines, checked October 9, 2026. Covers civic addresses; rural routes, PO boxes and bilingual addresses may need a manual look. The unused-letters check (D, F, I, O, Q, U) is a widely documented convention rather than a line in the guidelines.

Questions about checking Canadian addresses

How do I check an address in Canada?

Paste the address into the checker and review the result. It checks postal code format, the province match and Canada Post formatting rules. It cannot confirm that the address exists or identify who lives there.

What does a verified result tell me?

A verified result means the address passes the rules this checker applies. It does not mean the address was matched against Canada Post’s address database or that mail is guaranteed to arrive.

Does Canada Post require a particular address format?

Yes. Canada Post publishes addressing guidelines for elements such as unit numbers, street types, provinces and postal codes. This checker applies formatting rules to help prepare a consistent address block for mailing.

Can I check addresses through your API?

Yes. You get address checks in the direct mail API when saving recipients or sending mail. The checks use the same rules as this tool. There is no separate REST address-lookup endpoint.

Is this the same as Canada Post AddressComplete?

No. This tool checks formatting and postal code rules in your browser. It does not look up an address in Canada Post’s database. Use it to catch formatting errors before preparing your mailing.

How much does it cost to mail a letter?

Postage depends on the item’s size and weight. Once you’ve checked the address, use our Canada Post postage calculator to compare postage methods and the cost of printing and mailing through Direct Mailer.
